Avventura nel castello
Submission for LocJam Made In Italy (2023)
When the only language you can translate into is Italian, and the localization jam has an Italian source, there's not much to do. But since my partner took on the epic and time-consuming meticulous task of transposing it into Trentino's dialect, I needed an excuse to spend a few days sitting next to him.
After transferring our workstations to the living room table for eight days to work side by side, I started making small improvements and adjustments to the original version.
Don't get me wrong, the original version is well-crafted, and except for some improvements to accents, punctuations and spacing, the only changes I made are purely related to my personal taste.
However, what I could do, and it took quite some time, was to adapt the texts, which are almost as old as I am, to the new inclusive standards that should always be considered when translating video games, especially nowadays.
While more and more games use the schwa (ə) to replace the gendered endings of Italian variable parts of speech, we try to limit its use for better readability (it's a solution that may not be very readable to those with dyslexia and may not be recognizable to everyone). Besides, what an exercise in style it would have been if it had been enough to replace every ending with a simple ə?
Allow me to welcome you to Adventure in the castle - Reloaded, the inclusive version of the '82 classic text adventure, brought to you by the Locjam Before Christmas team, featuring Chiara the localizer and Davide the code-tinker!
